How to use this checklist
Set aside about 20 minutes and open your most recent pay stub. Work through the sections in order, tick each item, and fix anything that looks wrong with payroll before the next pay period. The checklist is general information, not tax advice.
1. Confirm the inputs
Start with the numbers your employer actually uses. A small input mistake changes every line below it.
2. Review federal withholding
Federal income tax is usually the largest line on a paycheck. Check it once after a raise, a job change, or a filing-status change.
3. Review state and local withholding
State rules vary widely, and local taxes are the most commonly missed line item when people compare offers.
4. Check pre-tax benefits and deductions
Pre-tax benefits can lower your tax bill, but they also reduce the cash that reaches your bank account today. Make the trade-off on purpose.
5. Audit one full pay stub
Pick a normal paycheck and reconcile it line by line. This catches most payroll errors before they repeat all year.
6. Plan for year-end and job moves
A few checks now can prevent a cash-flow surprise in April or when you change jobs.
Answers
Frequently asked questions
What should I check on my first 2026 paycheck?
Check gross pay, federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state income tax, pre-tax deductions, and your year-to-date totals. Compare the tax lines with the 2026 paycheck calculator and ask payroll about anything that looks duplicated or missing.
How often should I review my withholding?
Review it after a raise, a job change, marriage, divorce, a move to another state, or a large change in side income. Otherwise, check the W-4 and one pay stub once a year.
Does this checklist include state-specific rules?
The checklist covers the questions to ask, not every state rule. Use the state calculator pages for 2026 brackets, deductions, official agency links, and local tax notes.
Can I print or download the checklist?
Yes. Use the print button to save it as a PDF, or download the plain-text copy. The full checklist is free and does not require an email, though the email form will send you back to the printable version.
