How this paycheck calculator works

Your net pay is your gross pay minus four main buckets: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and state income tax. The calculator applies each one in order:

  1. Federal income tax

We subtract the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly) and apply the 2026 marginal brackets. Pre-tax 401(k) and health contributions reduce taxable income.

  2. FICA

Social Security is 6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base. Medicare is 1.45% of wages, plus 0.9% above the additional Medicare threshold for high earners.

  3. State income tax

We use each state's 2026 brackets and deductions. Nine states do not tax wage income. Local city and county taxes are not included.

  4. Take-home pay

We subtract total tax and any pre-tax contributions from gross pay, then show the result per year, month, semimonthly, biweekly, week, and hour.

What is not included

  • Local, city, and county income taxes (for example, New York City or Philadelphia).
  • Wage garnishments, union dues, and post-tax deductions.
  • Tax credits, itemized deductions, and income outside your salary.
  • Your employer's exact withholding tables and your W-4 elections.

Use the result to compare offers and plan a budget, not to predict your W-2 to the dollar.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

How does this paycheck calculator work?

It applies the 2026 federal income tax brackets, Social Security and Medicare rates, and your state's 2026 income tax rules to your gross pay, then subtracts the total from gross pay.

Is this paycheck calculator accurate?

It is an estimate for planning and comparison. Actual withholding depends on your W-4, employer payroll tables, local taxes, credits, and other income.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington (wages), and Wyoming do not tax wage income.

Does a 401(k) reduce Social Security and Medicare tax?

Generally no. Traditional 401(k) contributions reduce federal and state income tax, but they usually do not reduce FICA wages.
